DGS South Athletic Bands
Marching Band
Having formed an outstanding and competitive reputation over the last 40 years, the Marching Mustangs continue to provide wind and percussion players and Color Guard performers at South High with an exciting, rewarding, and musical team experience.
Features for the dedicated volunteer students of this organization typically include a fall schedule of 5-6 competitive performances including a weekend overnight trip. Preparation generally includes practices in the spring, mini-camp and evening rehearsals in June, four-hour evening rehearsals in August, an intensive but fun week-long band camp experience in late August, and two 3-hour evening rehearsals each week during September and October.
The Marching Mustangs also perform at all home football games and play host to our own annual Marching Mustang Music Bowl competition here on campus.
Students, including eighth graders, register for membership in the Marching Mustangs in February for the following fall season and follow a payment schedule to cover costs associated with band camp and the weekend trip. Students are assigned to a 5th period resource for daily marching band communications and activities during the fall season and enjoy study hall and/or pep band rehearsal time the rest of the year.
Pep Band
The Pep Band provides music for both Boys and Girls Varisty Basketball teams during the Winter Basketball Season. Pep Band is open to any DGS Band student. Rehearsals take place during 5A.
Winter Guard
The Downers Grove South Winter Guard performs indoors, usually in a gymnasium or an indoor arena. Performances make use of recorded music rather than a live band or orchestra. Winter guard ensembles commonly perform at judged competitions officiated by local and regional associations such as Midwest Color Guard or WGI - Sport of the Arts.
