Welcome to DGS Winter Guard!  For those that are new to the concept of Winterguard, picture the color guard routines complete with flags, rifles, sabers, dance and props done inside on the basketball floor without the band.  They perform to recorded music.   The best part is that there is no wind, rain, snow, or cold to keep you away!

Most rehearsals are scheduled for Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday.  Practices are usually 2 – 3 times per week but are not always on consistent nights due to inside gym availability.  Competitions will usually start in late January to February.  The season usually ends around April 1st.  This year the end of our season is the Midwest Colorguard championship at LaPorte, Indiana.  It is a 2 day competition with Prelims on Saturday and finals on Sunday. The guard will be performing at both.  Please note that the championship competition is the first weekend of the school break.

The Downers Grove South Winter Guard performs indoors, usually in a gymnasium or an indoor arena. Performances make use of recorded music rather than a live band or orchestra. Winter guard ensembles commonly perform at judged competitions officiated by local and regional associations such as Midwest Color Guard or WGI - Sport of the Arts.

Competition categories are different from marching band. Guards are placed in a competitive category based on past performance, abilities, and the difficulty of the show.  Last year we competed in scholastic A in the Midwest Colorguard circuit (http://www.midwestcolorguard.com) against some very competitive guards. (Lincolnway, Victor J Andrew, Naperville North, Lockport, Marian Catholic, etc.)

Winter Guard hosts a Winter Guard Festival at Downers Grove South High School every other year.
